Ah, I hadn't considered the server FPS issue... although, you could do ONLY the ODE simulation multiple times per server-frame, then send a "snapshot" of each ragdoll once per frame...

As for bandwidth, you can just throw packet compression at it until it goes away. Since you'd have to extend the protocol *anyway* to do this, it would be an opportune moment to add compression to the protocol as well. Net effect on bandwidth (ragdolls+compression) would actually probably be a reduction.

That being said, client side is reasonable too (albeit not, in my opinion, the most elegant solution.)

There are two major problems doing ragdolls as server side:

1 - The amount of bandwidth overhead would be quite higher than it currently is.

2 - The frame rate of the server would have to be drastically increased, otherwise collision detection resolution would be too low. Increasing server frame rate would also increase bandwidth overhead, compounding the original problem.

I do still think that having the server involved would be a reasonable way to implement ragdolls as well, but we've been over this. :)

Hi Vic :)

That does clear it up a bit more, and obviously this was more of a coincidence than anything. At the time, from my POV, and not knowing the background, given that you guys are a little more clandestine than we are, it didn't seem so.

Hello Irritant! Long time no see :)
I can assure you that the release date for Warsow was not in any manner tied to AA's release. As ETR said the release date had been set to coincide with the Christmas duel cup and guess what - Christmas. It was intended to be a surprise for the community - to announce the release during the shoutcast (and historically we never announce release dates/deadlines beforehand). As for me, I was in Germany at the time of the AA's release and wasn't even aware of it until I hit the planetquake.com page looking for Warsow news.
Anyway, the bottom line is that "Christmas" releases isn't something completely new or AA invention. All three releases are probably coincidental and the incident being Christmas, this is my POV.

Cheers.

Well thank you for clearing that up. I still find it very difficult to believe that the Warsow team was unaware of the release of Alien Arena, given that the news was plastered all over the internet's gaming news/tech sites, such as Blues News, Gamershell, Planetquake, Phoronix, Mod/IndieDB, etc, and given that you yourself post news for Warsow, on many of the same venues such as Mod/IndieDB. When you posted the news about Warsow on Mod/IndieDB, the news for Alien Arena was still on the front page in fact. I would think that somebody as involved with a gaming project as yourself would take the time to read the gaming news on the very site he was posting on. If not, then...well...you really should. There are a lot of interesting projects.

I think you also need to understand that I am not angry about it, in fact I found it to be a bit flattering and interesting. You do have to admit, the timing was a bit unusual, even if by accident as you claim.

Regardless, as I mentioned, I think that all three games have their niche, and are moving in good directions for the most part.

I feel compelled to respond, being involved with the Warsow release and all...

I can assure you that I (and I think it's safe to say the entire team) were utterly unaware of the release of Alien Arena. It might sound improbable to you, as I gather you keep track of the happenings in the opensource FPS scene pretty well...

We have been planning a release for a long time, and in the end we collectively set the date on last Sunday, after a big duel cup. This was after numerous earlier deadlines we had set for ourselves but have not reached.

And I'd like to refute your suggestion of Warsow being hastily thrown together; this was not the case. It's not the first time some bugs and things pop up after a major release. There was no 'sense of urgency' because of a release of another opensource free FPS game we were unaware of ;). There might have only been a sense of urgency because of previously missed deadlines.

I didn't know about the release of Xonotic either, untill I read this, and I first knew of your game being released when I read an article which mentioned Warsow and AA.

Anyway, I think it's fair to clear some things up, after being subtly accused of stealing limelight or whatever else you imply with your description of opensource releases ;). In the end it's no prob, as I think all 3 games are 'unique' enough to be able to stand on its own!
